News feeds from Bar Hill School

What are News Feeds?
Newsfeeds or RSS (Really Simple Syndication) are web pages designed to be read by computers rather than people. News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.

Newsfeeds offer the user more privacy as you choose what to subscribe to and when. It requires no user name or email address and as this method of notification becomes more popular it will help to reduce the volume of spam in our inboxes.

How do I start using feeds?
The first thing you need is a news reader. This is software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are basically two different types, those that access feeds through your browser, and those that are downloadable applications. Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer, in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.

Internet Explorer 7, Firefox and Outlook 2007 all support RSS feeds.

Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive and then subscribe to that feed. For example, if you would like the latest Bar Hill School news, visit any section of our website and you will see an orange button on the top right of the page.

RSS

If you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways, follow the on screen instructions, drag the URL of the feed into your news reader or cut & paste the URL into your news reader. Most sites that offer feeds use a similar orange RSS feed button. Some browsers, including Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 automatically check for feeds when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one.

How do I get a news reader?
There is a range of different news readers and many are free for personal use. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so check the ones that will work with your computer. Popular readers include FeedDemon, Newsfire, NewsGator, and Bloglines.
