Holidays In Term Time
Lately there has been a huge increase in children being taken out of school for term time family holidays. As you know, the holidays will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and it is import to consider the impact this additional absence has on your child’s education.
I appreciate that holidays are much cheaper in term time and that for some families there may not be a choice as to when holidays can be taken but if you do have a choice, please consider this carefully.
Parent Questionnaire
Thank you very much for the questionnaires. They have been analysed and I have prepared a feedback letter for you which will be sent out on Monday.

Dear Parent/Carer
The Big Pedal is a FREE national cycle-to-school race taking place 7 – 25 March this year, and Bar Hill C P School has registered to take part!
We need YOU to get involved with The Big Pedal cycle race
With fantastic prizes for pupils and schools (not to mention the health benefits), we’d love it if you could get involved and take part in The Big Pedal too. The more pupils, staff and parents that cycle to school, the better your school will do, and the higher their chances of winning prizes.
How does the race work?
The Big Pedal is a stage race and works a bit like the Tour de France. Each day is a new stage in the race which takes schools on a route all round the UK. Schools log how many people cycle into school each day and the more people that do, the faster their time will be for that stage. The winning school is the school that completes the whole race in the fastest time.
How do I get involved?
The most important thing you can do is encourage your child(ren) to cycle to school during the race, and to join them in doing so. Years 5 and 6 can park within school grounds. Reception to Year 4 will need to park their bikes outside the school fence.
More information
If you’d like to keep track of how your school is doing, and for lots more information about the race, visit The Big Pedal website: www.thebigpedal.org.uk. Alternatively, we will be recording all the journeys being made in school, and the school’s times and stage position will be recorded on a giant wallchart.
Why we’re taking part
We think it’s a fantastic way to promote cycling in our school and get more pupils riding their bikes. Children who have recently completed cycle training will immediately be able to put their knowledge to use and develop their cycling skills further. What’s more it’s a fun, sociable way to start the day and we’ll be competing to become the UK’s best cycling school!
Great prizes too!
The top prize is a bicycle stunt show from Team M.A.D, the UK’s No. 1 Mountain Bike Display Team. Plus Land Rover bikes, cycle storage from Cyclepods and further regional prizes - so lots to get excited about!
The Big Pedal has been developed by Sustrans from its Virtual Bike Race in 2010, which encouraged over 280,000 cycle journeys to school. This is an excellent way to promote active travel and to introduce children to cycling.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about the event.
Mrs Tabram
Dear parents/carers
What have we been doing?
As you would expect, December was busy. There was a raffle, a cake stall, the ever popular (and so very useful) Nearly New Sale, and the children were making Christmas cards. Then right at the end there was the brilliant end of term discos. This made a fantastic total of over £850 that will be fed back into the school. Well done to all who helped and participated.
Where is all this money going to?
Because we work so closely with the school we are not just raising money for the sake of it, but there are specific items we need. This year we have 3 targets.
- We started getting outdoor equipment last year, but we need more.
- We want to be part of the regions competitions, especially the Mini Olympics, so we will help fund the Sports Partnership in September.
- Our big target is to upgrade our reading provision, especially for reception and infants, but also revamp the book stock across all years. This is part of the governments’ initiative to have all children reading by age 6. We need new curriculum based reading packs, but it will cost money!
Coming soon…..dates for your diary
The next nearly new sale is on Saturday 26th March. The sale is on from 10 to 12. Don’t miss a bargain or two. The tables are £5 in advance or £7 on the day, and a 50p entrance fee for adults on the day. 8 a.m. set up in the school hall (please leave your details with the school office if interested).
The next Pop Quiz is on Saturday 2nd April. There is a slightly new format with no food this time, but tickets are only £4 a head, with a max of 8 people per team. Drinks at 7 p.m. and the quiz starts at 7.30.
The Fun Day is on Friday 20th May after school, with details nearer the time, and the leavers discos on Saturday 16th July.
What can you do?
All offers of help are greatly appreciated, but the latest requests are:
- One or two volunteers to help in the reception class on Friday mornings.
- Food hygiene qualified volunteers to help on the BBQ at the Fun Day
- Unwanted teddies to go to the Teddy Stall at the Fun Day
How to contact us:
Chat to a member of the PTA in the playground, or see our area of the school website. The school office can pass details to the PTA so we can get in touch with anyone interested in joining or helping.
The next committee meeting is 3rd March at 7.30 in the school staff room.

Dear Parent/Carers
Happy New Year
Welcome back to the start of our new term. Even though it seems a long time ago I hope you had an enjoyable break with your family. We now look forward to spring and longer days!
Reminder
During the first three weeks of May children in all year groups [except reception and year 1] throughout England have their annual assessments. KS2 (Year 6) SATs tests will take place during the week commencing the 10th of May. We would also ask all families to avoid taking holidays during this period.
Borrowed Clothes and Wet Play
Please return clothes lent to your child if they have fallen over and borrowed dry clothes from the school. We are very short now and will not be able to supply clean trousers.
Also, if your child has outgrown any trousers or leggings please could you donate them to the school.
During wet weather you may want to consider sending your child with a change of clothes.
Healthy Eating Tuck Shop
We will be restarting the healthy eating tuck shop this Wednesday, 12th January. Items to buy are still only 25p.
Parent Mail
If would like to receive letters and school information by email, let the school office know your email details and they will register you with Parentmail. You can also go on the site yourself to read more (www.parentmail.co.uk) or you can email the school office with your email details.
Just a reminder that if you wish to visit the school office in the morning after you have dropped your child off in their classroom, you must go back outside and enter the school via the main entrance. Please do not go through the school to reach the office.
This is a security measure so that we can identify adults who are in the school during the school day.
